Surah 56 · Meccan · 96 verses

56:1Juz 27 · p. 534

إِذَا وَقَعَتِ الْوَاقِعَةُ1

(1) When the Occurrence occurs,
56:2Juz 27 · p. 534

لَيْسَ لِوَقْعَتِهَا كَاذِبَةٌ2

(2) There is, at its occurrence, no denial.
56:3Juz 27 · p. 534

خَافِضَةٌ رَافِعَةٌ3

(3) It will bring down [some] and raise up [others].[1608]
____________________
[1608]- According to their deeds rather than wealth and social position, as is the case in this world.
56:4Juz 27 · p. 534

إِذَا رُجَّتِ الْأَرْضُ رَجًّا4

(4) When the earth is shaken with convulsion
56:5Juz 27 · p. 534

وَبُسَّتِ الْجِبَالُ بَسًّا5

(5) And the mountains are broken down, crumbling
56:6Juz 27 · p. 534

فَكَانَتْ هَبَاءً مُنْبَثًّا6

(6) And become dust dispersing,
56:7Juz 27 · p. 534

وَكُنْتُمْ أَزْوَاجًا ثَلَاثَةً7

(7) And you become [of] three kinds:
56:8Juz 27 · p. 534

فَأَصْحَابُ الْمَيْمَنَةِ مَا أَصْحَابُ الْمَيْمَنَةِ8

(8) Then the companions of the right - what are the companions of the right?[1609]

[1609]- i.e., those given their records in their right hand and who are destined for Paradise.

وَأَصْحَابُ الْمَشْأَمَةِ مَا أَصْحَابُ الْمَشْأَمَةِ9

(9) And the companions of the left - what are companions of the left?[1610]

[1610]- i.e., those given their records in their left hand and who are destined for Hell.

وَالسَّابِقُونَ السَّابِقُونَ10

(10) And the forerunners, the forerunners[1611] -

[1611]- The words can also be understood as a complete sentence, i.e., "The forerunners [in good deeds] are the forerunners [in entering Paradise]."
56:11Juz 27 · p. 534

أُولَٰئِكَ الْمُقَرَّبُونَ11

(11) Those are the ones brought near [to Allāh]
56:12Juz 27 · p. 534

فِي جَنَّاتِ النَّعِيمِ12

(12) In the Gardens of Pleasure,
56:13Juz 27 · p. 534

ثُلَّةٌ مِنَ الْأَوَّلِينَ13

(13) A [large] company of the former peoples
56:14Juz 27 · p. 534

وَقَلِيلٌ مِنَ الْآخِرِينَ14

(14) And a few of the later peoples,
56:15Juz 27 · p. 534

عَلَىٰ سُرُرٍ مَوْضُونَةٍ15

(15) On thrones woven [with ornament],
56:16Juz 27 · p. 534

مُتَّكِئِينَ عَلَيْهَا مُتَقَابِلِينَ16

(16) Reclining on them, facing each other.
56:17Juz 27 · p. 535

يَطُوفُ عَلَيْهِمْ وِلْدَانٌ مُخَلَّدُونَ17

(17) There will circulate among them young boys made eternal.
56:18Juz 27 · p. 535

بِأَكْوَابٍ وَأَبَارِيقَ وَكَأْسٍ مِنْ مَعِينٍ18

(18) With vessels, pitchers and a cup [of wine] from a flowing spring -
56:19Juz 27 · p. 535

لَا يُصَدَّعُونَ عَنْهَا وَلَا يُنْزِفُونَ19

(19) No headache will they have therefrom, nor will they be intoxicated -
56:20Juz 27 · p. 535

وَفَاكِهَةٍ مِمَّا يَتَخَيَّرُونَ20

(20) And fruit of what they select
56:21Juz 27 · p. 535

وَلَحْمِ طَيْرٍ مِمَّا يَشْتَهُونَ21

(21) And the meat of fowl, from whatever they desire.
56:22Juz 27 · p. 535

وَحُورٌ عِينٌ22

(22) And [for them are] fair women with large, [beautiful] eyes,
56:23Juz 27 · p. 535

كَأَمْثَالِ اللُّؤْلُؤِ الْمَكْنُونِ23

(23) The likenesses of pearls well-protected,
56:24Juz 27 · p. 535

جَزَاءً بِمَا كَانُوا يَعْمَلُونَ24

(24) As reward for what they used to do.
56:25Juz 27 · p. 535

لَا يَسْمَعُونَ فِيهَا لَغْوًا وَلَا تَأْثِيمًا25

(25) They will not hear therein ill speech or commission of sin -
56:26Juz 27 · p. 535

إِلَّا قِيلًا سَلَامًا سَلَامًا26

(26) Only a saying [of] peace, peace.
56:27Juz 27 · p. 535

وَأَصْحَابُ الْيَمِينِ مَا أَصْحَابُ الْيَمِينِ27

(27) The companions of the right - what are the companions of the right?
56:28Juz 27 · p. 535

فِي سِدْرٍ مَخْضُودٍ28

(28) [They will be] among lote trees with thorns removed.
56:29Juz 27 · p. 535

وَطَلْحٍ مَنْضُودٍ29

(29) And [banana] trees layered [with fruit].
56:30Juz 27 · p. 535

وَظِلٍّ مَمْدُودٍ30

(30) And shade extended.
56:31Juz 27 · p. 535

وَمَاءٍ مَسْكُوبٍ31

(31) And water poured out
56:32Juz 27 · p. 535

وَفَاكِهَةٍ كَثِيرَةٍ32

(32) And fruit, abundant [and varied],
56:33Juz 27 · p. 535

لَا مَقْطُوعَةٍ وَلَا مَمْنُوعَةٍ33

(33) Neither limited [to season] nor forbidden,
56:34Juz 27 · p. 535

وَفُرُشٍ مَرْفُوعَةٍ34

(34) And [upon] beds raised high.
56:35Juz 27 · p. 535

إِنَّا أَنْشَأْنَاهُنَّ إِنْشَاءً35

(35) Indeed, We have produced them [i.e., the women of Paradise] in a [new] creation
56:36Juz 27 · p. 535

فَجَعَلْنَاهُنَّ أَبْكَارًا36

(36) And made them virgins,
56:37Juz 27 · p. 535

عُرُبًا أَتْرَابًا37

(37) Devoted [to their husbands] and of equal age,
56:38Juz 27 · p. 535

لِأَصْحَابِ الْيَمِينِ38

(38) For the companions of the right [who are]
56:39Juz 27 · p. 535

ثُلَّةٌ مِنَ الْأَوَّلِينَ39

(39) A company of the former peoples
56:40Juz 27 · p. 535

وَثُلَّةٌ مِنَ الْآخِرِينَ40

(40) And a company of the later peoples.
56:41Juz 27 · p. 535

وَأَصْحَابُ الشِّمَالِ مَا أَصْحَابُ الشِّمَالِ41

(41) And the companions of the left - what are the companions of the left?
56:42Juz 27 · p. 535

فِي سَمُومٍ وَحَمِيمٍ42

(42) [They will be] in scorching fire and scalding water
56:43Juz 27 · p. 535

وَظِلٍّ مِنْ يَحْمُومٍ43

(43) And a shade of black smoke,
56:44Juz 27 · p. 535

لَا بَارِدٍ وَلَا كَرِيمٍ44

(44) Neither cool nor beneficial.
56:45Juz 27 · p. 535

إِنَّهُمْ كَانُوا قَبْلَ ذَٰلِكَ مُتْرَفِينَ45

(45) Indeed they were, before that, indulging in affluence,
56:46Juz 27 · p. 535

وَكَانُوا يُصِرُّونَ عَلَى الْحِنْثِ الْعَظِيمِ46

(46) And they used to persist in the great violation,[1612]

[1612]- i.e., shirk (association with Allāh) or disbelief.
56:47Juz 27 · p. 535

وَكَانُوا يَقُولُونَ أَئِذَا مِتْنَا وَكُنَّا تُرَابًا وَعِظَامًا أَإِنَّا لَمَبْعُوثُونَ47

(47) And they used to say, "When we die and become dust and bones, are we indeed to be resurrected?
56:48Juz 27 · p. 535

أَوَآبَاؤُنَا الْأَوَّلُونَ48

(48) And our forefathers [as well]?"
56:49Juz 27 · p. 535

قُلْ إِنَّ الْأَوَّلِينَ وَالْآخِرِينَ49

(49) Say, [O Muḥammad], "Indeed, the former and later peoples
56:50Juz 27 · p. 535

لَمَجْمُوعُونَ إِلَىٰ مِيقَاتِ يَوْمٍ مَعْلُومٍ50

(50) Are to be gathered together for the appointment of a known Day."
56:51Juz 27 · p. 536

ثُمَّ إِنَّكُمْ أَيُّهَا الضَّالُّونَ الْمُكَذِّبُونَ51

(51) Then indeed you, O those astray [who are] deniers,
56:52Juz 27 · p. 536

لَآكِلُونَ مِنْ شَجَرٍ مِنْ زَقُّومٍ52

(52) Will be eating from trees of zaqqūm
56:53Juz 27 · p. 536

فَمَالِئُونَ مِنْهَا الْبُطُونَ53

(53) And filling with it your bellies
56:54Juz 27 · p. 536

فَشَارِبُونَ عَلَيْهِ مِنَ الْحَمِيمِ54

(54) And drinking on top of it from scalding water.
56:55Juz 27 · p. 536

فَشَارِبُونَ شُرْبَ الْهِيمِ55

(55) And will drink as the drinking of thirsty camels.
56:56Juz 27 · p. 536

هَٰذَا نُزُلُهُمْ يَوْمَ الدِّينِ56

(56) That is their accommodation on the Day of Recompense.
56:57Juz 27 · p. 536

نَحْنُ خَلَقْنَاكُمْ فَلَوْلَا تُصَدِّقُونَ57

(57) We have created you, so why do you not believe?
56:58Juz 27 · p. 536

أَفَرَأَيْتُمْ مَا تُمْنُونَ58

(58) Have you seen that which you emit?[1613]

[1613]- i.e., semen, which contains the potential for human life.
56:59Juz 27 · p. 536

أَأَنْتُمْ تَخْلُقُونَهُ أَمْ نَحْنُ الْخَالِقُونَ59

(59) Is it you who creates it, or are We the Creator?
56:60Juz 27 · p. 536

نَحْنُ قَدَّرْنَا بَيْنَكُمُ الْمَوْتَ وَمَا نَحْنُ بِمَسْبُوقِينَ60

(60) We have decreed death among you, and We are not to be outdone
56:61Juz 27 · p. 536

عَلَىٰ أَنْ نُبَدِّلَ أَمْثَالَكُمْ وَنُنْشِئَكُمْ فِي مَا لَا تَعْلَمُونَ61

(61) In that We will change your likenesses and produce you in that [form] which you do not know.[1614]

[1614]- An alternative meaning has also been given: "...in that We will replace the likes of you [with others upon the earth] and create you [in the Hereafter] in that which you do not know."
56:62Juz 27 · p. 536

وَلَقَدْ عَلِمْتُمُ النَّشْأَةَ الْأُولَىٰ فَلَوْلَا تَذَكَّرُونَ62

(62) And you have already known the first creation, so will you not remember?
56:63Juz 27 · p. 536

أَفَرَأَيْتُمْ مَا تَحْرُثُونَ63

(63) And have you seen that [seed] which you sow?
56:64Juz 27 · p. 536

أَأَنْتُمْ تَزْرَعُونَهُ أَمْ نَحْنُ الزَّارِعُونَ64

(64) Is it you who makes it grow, or are We the grower?
56:65Juz 27 · p. 536

لَوْ نَشَاءُ لَجَعَلْنَاهُ حُطَامًا فَظَلْتُمْ تَفَكَّهُونَ65

(65) If We willed, We could make it [dry] debris, and you would remain in wonder,[1615]

[1615]- At what had happened or remain in a state of shock. Another meaning is "in regret".
56:66Juz 27 · p. 536

إِنَّا لَمُغْرَمُونَ66

(66) [Saying], "Indeed, we are [now] in debt;
56:67Juz 27 · p. 536

بَلْ نَحْنُ مَحْرُومُونَ67

(67) Rather, we have been deprived."
56:68Juz 27 · p. 536

أَفَرَأَيْتُمُ الْمَاءَ الَّذِي تَشْرَبُونَ68

(68) And have you seen the water that you drink?
56:69Juz 27 · p. 536

أَأَنْتُمْ أَنْزَلْتُمُوهُ مِنَ الْمُزْنِ أَمْ نَحْنُ الْمُنْزِلُونَ69

(69) Is it you who brought it down from the clouds, or is it We who bring it down?
56:70Juz 27 · p. 536

لَوْ نَشَاءُ جَعَلْنَاهُ أُجَاجًا فَلَوْلَا تَشْكُرُونَ70

(70) If We willed, We could make it bitter, so why are you not grateful?
56:71Juz 27 · p. 536

أَفَرَأَيْتُمُ النَّارَ الَّتِي تُورُونَ71

(71) And have you seen the fire that you ignite?
56:72Juz 27 · p. 536

أَأَنْتُمْ أَنْشَأْتُمْ شَجَرَتَهَا أَمْ نَحْنُ الْمُنْشِئُونَ72

(72) Is it you who produced its tree, or are We the producer?
56:73Juz 27 · p. 536

نَحْنُ جَعَلْنَاهَا تَذْكِرَةً وَمَتَاعًا لِلْمُقْوِينَ73

(73) We have made it a reminder[1616] and provision for the travelers,[1617]

[1616]- Of the great fire of Hell.
[1617]- In the form of flints or other means by which to ignite fire. Travelers are mentioned because of the special convenience to them, although it is a provision for all people in general.
56:74Juz 27 · p. 536

فَسَبِّحْ بِاسْمِ رَبِّكَ الْعَظِيمِ74

(74) So exalt the name of your Lord, the Most Great.
56:75Juz 27 · p. 536

۞ فَلَا أُقْسِمُ بِمَوَاقِعِ النُّجُومِ75

(75) Then I swear by the setting of the stars,[1618]

[1618]- Allāh (subḥānahu wa taʿālā) confirms absolutely by oath.
56:76Juz 27 · p. 536

وَإِنَّهُ لَقَسَمٌ لَوْ تَعْلَمُونَ عَظِيمٌ76

(76) And indeed, it is an oath - if you could know - [most] great.
56:77Juz 27 · p. 537

إِنَّهُ لَقُرْآنٌ كَرِيمٌ77

(77) Indeed, it is a noble Qur’ān.
56:78Juz 27 · p. 537

فِي كِتَابٍ مَكْنُونٍ78

(78) In a Register well-protected;[1619].

[1619]- The Preserved Slate (al-Lawḥ al-Maḥfūẓ), which is with Allāh (subḥānahu wa taʿālā).
56:80Juz 27 · p. 537

تَنْزِيلٌ مِنْ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ80

(80) [It is] a revelation from the Lord of the worlds.
56:81Juz 27 · p. 537

أَفَبِهَٰذَا الْحَدِيثِ أَنْتُمْ مُدْهِنُونَ81

(81) Then is it to this statement that you are indifferent
56:82Juz 27 · p. 537

وَتَجْعَلُونَ رِزْقَكُمْ أَنَّكُمْ تُكَذِّبُونَ82

(82) And make [the thanks for] your provision that you deny [the Provider]?
56:83Juz 27 · p. 537

فَلَوْلَا إِذَا بَلَغَتِ الْحُلْقُومَ83

(83) Then why, when it [i.e., the soul at death] reaches the throat
56:84Juz 27 · p. 537

وَأَنْتُمْ حِينَئِذٍ تَنْظُرُونَ84

(84) And you are at that time looking on -
56:85Juz 27 · p. 537

وَنَحْنُ أَقْرَبُ إِلَيْهِ مِنْكُمْ وَلَٰكِنْ لَا تُبْصِرُونَ85

(85) And We [i.e., Our angels] are nearer to him than you, but you do not see -
56:86Juz 27 · p. 537

فَلَوْلَا إِنْ كُنْتُمْ غَيْرَ مَدِينِينَ86

(86) Then why do you not, if you are not to be recompensed,
56:87Juz 27 · p. 537

تَرْجِعُونَهَا إِنْ كُنْتُمْ صَادِقِينَ87

(87) Bring it back,[1620] if you should be truthful?

[1620]- i.e., return the soul to the body, meaning that just as you cannot prevent death when it is decreed, you will not escape the recompense when it is decreed.
56:88Juz 27 · p. 537

فَأَمَّا إِنْ كَانَ مِنَ الْمُقَرَّبِينَ88

(88) And if he [i.e., the deceased] was of those brought near [to Allāh],
56:89Juz 27 · p. 537

فَرَوْحٌ وَرَيْحَانٌ وَجَنَّتُ نَعِيمٍ89

(89) Then [for him is] rest and bounty and a garden of pleasure.
56:90Juz 27 · p. 537

وَأَمَّا إِنْ كَانَ مِنْ أَصْحَابِ الْيَمِينِ90

(90) And if he was of the companions of the right,
56:91Juz 27 · p. 537

فَسَلَامٌ لَكَ مِنْ أَصْحَابِ الْيَمِينِ91

(91) Then [the angels will say], "Peace for you; [you are] from the companions of the right."
56:92Juz 27 · p. 537

وَأَمَّا إِنْ كَانَ مِنَ الْمُكَذِّبِينَ الضَّالِّينَ92

(92) But if he was of the deniers [who were] astray,
56:93Juz 27 · p. 537

فَنُزُلٌ مِنْ حَمِيمٍ93

(93) Then [for him is] accommodation of scalding water
56:94Juz 27 · p. 537

وَتَصْلِيَةُ جَحِيمٍ94

(94) And burning in Hellfire.
56:95Juz 27 · p. 537

إِنَّ هَٰذَا لَهُوَ حَقُّ الْيَقِينِ95

(95) Indeed, this is the true certainty,
56:96Juz 27 · p. 537

فَسَبِّحْ بِاسْمِ رَبِّكَ الْعَظِيمِ96

(96) So exalt the name of your Lord, the Most Great.
