سورة المدثر

Surah 74 · Meccan · 56 verses

74:1Juz 29 · p. 575

يَا أَيُّهَا الْمُدَّثِّرُ1

(1) O you who covers himself [with a garment],[1788]

[1788]- Referring to the Prophet (ﷺ).

قُمْ فَأَنْذِرْ2

(2) Arise and warn.
74:3Juz 29 · p. 575

وَرَبَّكَ فَكَبِّرْ3

(3) And your Lord glorify.
74:4Juz 29 · p. 575

وَثِيَابَكَ فَطَهِّرْ4

(4) And your clothing purify.
74:5Juz 29 · p. 575

وَالرُّجْزَ فَاهْجُرْ5

(5) And uncleanliness[1789] avoid.

[1789]- Specifically, idols or generally, bad conduct and morals.

وَلَا تَمْنُنْ تَسْتَكْثِرُ6

(6) And do not confer favor to acquire more[1790].

[1790]- An alternative meaning is "Do not consider any favor you have conferred to be great."
74:7Juz 29 · p. 575

وَلِرَبِّكَ فَاصْبِرْ7

(7) But for your Lord be patient.
74:8Juz 29 · p. 575

فَإِذَا نُقِرَ فِي النَّاقُورِ8

(8) And when the trumpet is blown,

فَذَٰلِكَ يَوْمَئِذٍ يَوْمٌ عَسِيرٌ9

(9) That Day will be a difficult day
74:10Juz 29 · p. 575

عَلَى الْكَافِرِينَ غَيْرُ يَسِيرٍ10

(10) For the disbelievers - not easy.
74:11Juz 29 · p. 575

ذَرْنِي وَمَنْ خَلَقْتُ وَحِيدًا11

(11) Leave Me with the one I created alone[1791]

[1791]- i.e., without wealth or children. The reference is to al-Waleed bin al-Mugheerah, who after inclining toward the Qur’ān, denied it publicly in order to win the approval of the Quraysh.

وَجَعَلْتُ لَهُ مَالًا مَمْدُودًا12

(12) And to whom I granted extensive wealth
74:13Juz 29 · p. 575

وَبَنِينَ شُهُودًا13

(13) And children present [with him]
74:14Juz 29 · p. 575

وَمَهَّدْتُ لَهُ تَمْهِيدًا14

(14) And spread [everything] before him, easing [his life].
74:15Juz 29 · p. 575

ثُمَّ يَطْمَعُ أَنْ أَزِيدَ15

(15) Then he desires that I should add more.
74:16Juz 29 · p. 575

كَلَّا ۖ إِنَّهُ كَانَ لِآيَاتِنَا عَنِيدًا16

(16) No! Indeed, he has been toward Our verses obstinate.
74:17Juz 29 · p. 575

سَأُرْهِقُهُ صَعُودًا17

(17) I will cover him with arduous torment.
74:18Juz 29 · p. 575

إِنَّهُ فَكَّرَ وَقَدَّرَ18

(18) Indeed, he thought and deliberated.[1792]

[1792]- About what he would say concerning the Qur’ān and how he might discredit the Prophet (ﷺ).

فَقُتِلَ كَيْفَ قَدَّرَ19

(19) So may he be destroyed [for] how he deliberated.

ثُمَّ قُتِلَ كَيْفَ قَدَّرَ20

(20) Then may he be destroyed [for] how he deliberated.

ثُمَّ نَظَرَ21

(21) Then he considered [again];

ثُمَّ عَبَسَ وَبَسَرَ22

(22) Then he frowned and scowled;

ثُمَّ أَدْبَرَ وَاسْتَكْبَرَ23

(23) Then he turned back and was arrogant

فَقَالَ إِنْ هَٰذَا إِلَّا سِحْرٌ يُؤْثَرُ24

(24) And said, "This is not but magic imitated [from others].
74:25Juz 29 · p. 576

إِنْ هَٰذَا إِلَّا قَوْلُ الْبَشَرِ25

(25) This is not but the word of a human being."
74:26Juz 29 · p. 576

سَأُصْلِيهِ سَقَرَ26

(26) I will drive him into Saqar.[1793]

[1793]- One of the proper names of Hell.

وَمَا أَدْرَاكَ مَا سَقَرُ27

(27) And what can make you know what is Saqar?
74:28Juz 29 · p. 576

لَا تُبْقِي وَلَا تَذَرُ28

(28) It lets nothing remain and leaves nothing [unburned],
74:29Juz 29 · p. 576

لَوَّاحَةٌ لِلْبَشَرِ29

(29) Altering [i.e., blackening] the skins.
74:30Juz 29 · p. 576

عَلَيْهَا تِسْعَةَ عَشَرَ30

(30) Over it are nineteen [angels].
74:31Juz 29 · p. 576

وَمَا جَعَلْنَا أَصْحَابَ النَّارِ إِلَّا مَلَائِكَةً ۙ وَمَا جَعَلْنَا عِدَّتَهُمْ إِلَّا فِتْنَةً لِلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا لِيَسْتَيْقِنَ الَّذِينَ أُوتُوا الْكِتَابَ وَيَزْدَادَ الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا إِيمَانًا ۙ وَلَا يَرْتَابَ الَّذِينَ أُوتُوا الْكِتَابَ وَالْمُؤْمِنُونَ ۙ وَلِيَقُولَ الَّذِينَ فِي قُلُوبِهِمْ مَرَضٌ وَالْكَافِرُونَ مَاذَا أَرَادَ اللَّهُ بِهَٰذَا مَثَلًا ۚ كَذَٰلِكَ يُضِلُّ اللَّهُ مَنْ يَشَاءُ وَيَهْدِي مَنْ يَشَاءُ ۚ وَمَا يَعْلَمُ جُنُودَ رَبِّكَ إِلَّا هُوَ ۚ وَمَا هِيَ إِلَّا ذِكْرَىٰ لِلْبَشَرِ31

(31) And We have not made the keepers of the Fire except angels. And We have not made their number except as a trial for those who disbelieve - that those who were given the Scripture will be convinced and those who have believed will increase in faith and those who were given the Scripture and the believers will not doubt and that those in whose hearts is disease [i.e., hypocrisy] and the disbelievers will say, "What does Allāh intend by this as an example?" Thus does Allāh send astray whom He wills and guide whom He wills. And none knows the soldiers of your Lord except Him. And it [i.e., mention of the Fire] is not but a reminder to humanity.

كَلَّا وَالْقَمَرِ32

(32) No! By the moon.
74:33Juz 29 · p. 576

وَاللَّيْلِ إِذْ أَدْبَرَ33

(33) And [by] the night when it departs.
74:34Juz 29 · p. 576

وَالصُّبْحِ إِذَا أَسْفَرَ34

(34) And [by] the morning when it brightens,
74:35Juz 29 · p. 576

إِنَّهَا لَإِحْدَى الْكُبَرِ35

(35) Indeed, it [i.e., the Fire] is of the greatest [afflictions].
74:36Juz 29 · p. 576

نَذِيرًا لِلْبَشَرِ36

(36) As a warning to humanity -
74:37Juz 29 · p. 576

لِمَنْ شَاءَ مِنْكُمْ أَنْ يَتَقَدَّمَ أَوْ يَتَأَخَّرَ37

(37) To whoever wills among you to proceed[1794] or stay behind.

كُلُّ نَفْسٍ بِمَا كَسَبَتْ رَهِينَةٌ38

(38) Every soul, for what it has earned, will be retained[1795].

[1795]- i.e., subject or held responsible.
74:39Juz 29 · p. 576

إِلَّا أَصْحَابَ الْيَمِينِ39

(39) Except the companions of the right,[1796].

[1796]- i.e., the righteous who receive their records in their right hands.

فِي جَنَّاتٍ يَتَسَاءَلُونَ40

(40) [Who will be] in gardens, questioning each other
74:41Juz 29 · p. 576

عَنِ الْمُجْرِمِينَ41

(41) About the criminals,
74:42Juz 29 · p. 576

مَا سَلَكَكُمْ فِي سَقَرَ42

(42) [And asking them], "What put you into Saqar?"
74:43Juz 29 · p. 576

قَالُوا لَمْ نَكُ مِنَ الْمُصَلِّينَ43

(43) They will say, "We were not of those who prayed,
74:44Juz 29 · p. 576

وَلَمْ نَكُ نُطْعِمُ الْمِسْكِينَ44

(44) Nor did we used to feed the poor.
74:45Juz 29 · p. 576

وَكُنَّا نَخُوضُ مَعَ الْخَائِضِينَ45

(45) And we used to enter into vain discourse with those who engaged [in it],
74:46Juz 29 · p. 576

وَكُنَّا نُكَذِّبُ بِيَوْمِ الدِّينِ46

(46) And we used to deny the Day of Recompense
74:47Juz 29 · p. 576

حَتَّىٰ أَتَانَا الْيَقِينُ47

(47) Until there came to us the certainty [i.e., death]."
74:48Juz 29 · p. 577

فَمَا تَنْفَعُهُمْ شَفَاعَةُ الشَّافِعِينَ48

(48) So there will not benefit them the intercession of [any] intercessors.
74:49Juz 29 · p. 577

فَمَا لَهُمْ عَنِ التَّذْكِرَةِ مُعْرِضِينَ49

(49) Then what is [the matter] with them that they are, from the reminder, turning away.
74:50Juz 29 · p. 577

كَأَنَّهُمْ حُمُرٌ مُسْتَنْفِرَةٌ50

(50) As if they were alarmed donkeys.
74:51Juz 29 · p. 577

فَرَّتْ مِنْ قَسْوَرَةٍ51

(51) Fleeing from a lion?
74:52Juz 29 · p. 577

بَلْ يُرِيدُ كُلُّ امْرِئٍ مِنْهُمْ أَنْ يُؤْتَىٰ صُحُفًا مُنَشَّرَةً52

(52) Rather, every person among them desires that he[1797] would be given scriptures spread about.[1798]

[1797]- Instead of Muḥammad (ﷺ).
[1798]- i.e., made public. Much of their refusal of his message was due to envy and jealousy of the Prophet (ﷺ).
74:53Juz 29 · p. 577

كَلَّا ۖ بَلْ لَا يَخَافُونَ الْآخِرَةَ53

(53) No! But they do not fear the Hereafter.
74:54Juz 29 · p. 577

كَلَّا إِنَّهُ تَذْكِرَةٌ54

(54) No! Indeed, it [i.e., the Qur’ān] is a reminder.
74:55Juz 29 · p. 577

فَمَنْ شَاءَ ذَكَرَهُ55

(55) Then whoever wills will remember it.
74:56Juz 29 · p. 577

وَمَا يَذْكُرُونَ إِلَّا أَنْ يَشَاءَ اللَّهُ ۚ هُوَ أَهْلُ التَّقْوَىٰ وَأَهْلُ الْمَغْفِرَةِ56

(56) And they will not remember except that Allāh wills. He is worthy of fear and adequate for [granting] forgiveness.
